Introduction 
 
This Directory provides information on the Mental Health Services 
provided by the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) NHS 
Trust.  It has primarily been prepared for staff, however this could 
also be used by a wider audience including partner organisations 
and local GPs. 
 
The main aim of the Directory is to provide a summary of the 
services that are available within the new wider Trust area 
(including contact details, location, operating hours, the referral 
process and eligibility criteria) in a straightforward single document. 
 
Mental Health Services within ABMU NHS Trust 
 
ABMU NHS Trust provides specialist Mental Health Services for 
the population of Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and the 
Western Vale of Glamorgan.  The Mental Health Directorate 
consists of 4 Service Groups, these are:-

  Older People Mental Health Services 
  Substance Misuse Services (excl. Western Vale)

  Forensic Mental Health Services (Regional Service) 
 
Services are provided by approximately 1,500 staff and a total 
budget of approximately £xxxxm. 
 
Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services are provided on a 
clinical network basis by Cwm Taf NHS Trust (previously 
Pontypridd & Rhondda NHS Trust). 
 
Services for Adults of Working Age 
 
Mental Health Services for Adults of Working Age are carried out 
predominantly within community settings by Community Mental 
Health Teams (CMHT’s). The teams are multi disciplinary and 
multi agency with integrated line managers and are aimed at 
providing effective assessment, care planning and treatment to 
individuals with mental health problems in the community. 
 
Services are provided in line with the principles of the Care 
Programme Approach (CPA) and are delivered in collaboration 
with a wide range of other providers from the statutory and 
voluntary sector. 
 
Inpatient services are available in each locality, in addition a range 
of additional specialist services are also provided, these include: 
  Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Services 
  Assertive Outreach Services 
  DGH Liaison and Bereavement Counselling Services 
  Prison In-reach Mental Health Services and Court Diversion  
 Criminal Justice Services 
  Peri-natal Mental Health Services 
  Specialist psychology and psychological therapy services 
  Day Hospital Services 
 Day Opportunities 
 Supported Accommodation 
  Rehabilitation and Respite Services 
  Primary Care Liaison Services and Gateway Workers 
 Eating Disorder Services and Personality Disorder Services 
are being developed

Older People Mental Health Services are based around multi 
disciplinary and multi agency Community Mental Health Teams 
(CMHTs).  CMHTs are supported by access to inpatient services 
which are available in each locality. 
 
The focus of the service is on maintaining independence by 
supporting people at home as much as possible, reducing the 
need for hospital admissions or care placements, and on 
maintaining a quality of life for individuals who use the service and 
their carers.  The following range of additional specialist services 
are provided for older people: 
 DGH Liaison – with a Liaison Old Age Consultant 
Psychiatrist available in Swansea and a “Shared Care” Ward 
established in Bridgend 
 Various levels of service for those suffering early onset 
dementia clinic 
  Psychological Therapy Services 
  Memory clinics operating similarly across all localities 
  Nursing Home Liaison Services 
  Residential Home Advisers / In-reach 
 Respite Services 
  Primary Care Education Facilitator 
  Day Hospital Services 
  Support & Stay / Stay at Home Services 
 
Substance Misuse Services (excl. Western Vale) 
 
Services for people with Substance Misuse issues are provided 
from the Community Drug and Alcohol Teams (CDATs), based in 
Trem Y Mor (which provides a range of substance misuse services 
for Bridgend and NPT) and Cwm Bwrla (Swansea). 
 
These services are supported by a dedicated 5 bed unit at Cefn 
Coed Hospital, 2 dedicated substance misuse beds at Ward F, 
NPTH and a range of other services, these include:- 
 Needle Exchange Services 
  Home Detoxification Programme 
  Supervised Consumption of Methadone 
 Drug Intervention Programme (DIP) that offers community 
support for people who are in contact with the criminal justice 
system who have left treatment 
 Assessment Service

Forensic Mental Health Services (Regional Service) 
 
The Caswell Clinic Medium Secure Unit based at Glanrhyd 
Hospital provides 61 mixed gender inpatient beds on 5 wards.  
This new purpose built clinic provides specialist healthcare 
services for people from South Wales with mental health problems 
who are offenders or have a potential to offend. 
 
The service is supported by:- 
  5 multi-disciplinary Clinical Teams 
  Multi-agency Community Services 
 Outpatient clinics are held at HMP Parc, Cardiff and 
Swansea 
 Academic department 
 
Future Plans 
 
Modernisation projects are already underway in both Bridgend and 
Swansea to ensure first class Mental Health Services are provided.  
Funding of approximately £100m has been secured from the 
Welsh Assembly Government to ensure purpose-built new build 
accommodation and to facilitate various service developments, 
including to modernise working practices. 
 
In addition, following the merger of the Swansea and Bro 
Morgannwg NHS Trust and the formation of the larger Directorate, 
a review of the Directorate structure and the services provided by
