The Pugin Room Works of Art
Clockwise from the North Wall
1. Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860)
By Henry William Pickersgill
Oil on canvas
Sir Charles Barry won the architectural commission
for the new Palace of Westminster in 1836 after a
national competition. Within this portrait, to the
right of the figure of Barry himself is shown a design
of the Victoria Tower. Barry’s overall design was
particularly praised for the enfilade of major
interiors (Robing Room, Chambers, and Lobbies)
along the central axis of the principal floor (the line
of route). This must have seemed a vision of
simplicity and coherence after the motley collection
of buildings which had formed the old Palace.
2. Jane Pugin (nee Knill) (1827-1909)
By George Augustus Freezor
Oil on canvas - lent from a private collection
Jane Knill was AWN Pugin’s third wife whom he
married in 1848. On his wedding day Pugin wrote ‘I
am married, I have got a first rate Gothic women at
last’. Tragically Pugin was to die only four years
later. Jane outlived her husband by some 57 years.
In this portrait, Jane is shown wearing some of the
jewellery designed by Pugin for their wedding date.
This portrait was clearly intended as a comparison for
that of Pugin himself, as the near identical frame
suggests. However, recent conservation work to the
frames has shown that elements of this frame,
particularly the quatrefoil ornaments are plaster not
carved wood and appear to have been cast from the
original Pugin frame. Bronze paint, which has been
applied to the frames at a later date, has been
removed revealing a surprising amount of original
gilding.
3. Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852)
By John Roger Herbert
Oil on canvas
This is the best known portrait of the celebrated
architect and design of the Gothic Revival. The
unfinished, two-dimensional appearance is perhaps
explained by the fact that Pugin, a notorious
workaholic, grudgingly allowed the artist only twenty
minutes for sitting. The frame was designed by Pugin

painted and gilded decoration in the new Palace of
Westminster. Within the quatrefoil above Pugin’s
head is the family emblem, the Martlet, a
mythological bird that has no feet. Curiously here

match the birds in the other quatrefoils.
