Sir Charles Barry won the architectural commission for the

new Palace of Westminster in 1836 after a national
served with butter
competition.  Within this portrait, to the right of the
figure of Barry himself is shown a design of the Victoria

Tower.  Barry’s overall design was particularly praised for

the enfilade of major interiors (Robing Room, Chambers,
Available All Day
and Lobbies) along the central axis of the principal floor

(the line of route).  This must have seemed a vision of

Cafetière of Coffee per person ............... £0.85

Oil on canvas - lent from a private collection

Hot Chocolate..................................... £0.85
Jane Knill was AWN Pugin’s third wife whom he married in

1848.  On his wedding day Pugin wrote ‘I am married, I

have got a first rate Gothic women at last’.  Tragically
with whipped cream & marshmallows ............ £1.45
Pugin was to die only four years later.  Jane outlived her

husband by some 57 years.  In this portrait, Jane is shown

wearing some of the jewellery designed by Pugin for their
wedding date.  This portrait was clearly intended as a
Afternoon Tea
comparison for that of Pugin himself, as the near identical
available 15:00-17:30
frame  suggests.    However,  recent  conservation  work  to

the frames has shown that elements of this frame,

that Pugin, a notorious workaholic, grudgingly allowed the

artist only twenty minutes for sitting.  The frame was

Pugin’s head is the family emblem, the Martlet, a

feet have been added at a later date, possibly to match

the birds in the other quatrefoils.
