Managers Guidance - Probationary Process

The aim of this guidance is to enable managers to apply the council's Probationary Policy in respect of a recruitment campaign.

1. Policy Requirements

All new entrants to local government are subject to a six month probationary period.

The aim of the Probationary Period Policy and Procedure is to provide a framework within which employees are helped to reach and maintain acceptable standards of performance, conduct and attendance.

2. Recruitment Process

When a person applies for a job with the council their application guidance notes explain about the probationary period.

At the interview the chair of panel will need to explain the probationary period to applicants who do not fall into the following categories:

When you have selected your preferred applicant you must identify if the probationary period applies and ensure details are added to the New Starter Form 0001 Part A in Date Monitoring (see screen shot below). Your recruitment co-ordinator will remind you about this at the appropriate time.

Where the probationary period is applicable the new starter contract will reflect the terms of this.

You will be reminded by the BSC that the period is coming to an end between 8 and 4 weeks before the end date.
