window openings with little intervention. The edges are magnetically sealed to

the windows.
With a low emissivity coating on the fabric the U- value of a single glazed
window can be reduced from 5.6 to 1.8, and further if combined with
conventional curtains.
In summer the blind can be partially deployed to provide solar shading and
allowing ventilation without the blinds banging.
The system is a method of addressing the insulation and air-tightness of old
windows at a relatively low cost and disruption, leaving the external façade
appearance in tact, with the benefits of high ventilation rates and heatloss
through single glazed windows in the summer.

based on our expertise and experience:
Monitoring and post-occupancy evaluation (POE) of environmental
performance of homes, offices and public buildings
I have led energy audits, monitoring and post-occupancy evaluation studies of
about 40 buildings (domestic and non-domestic), and I also run a post-graduate
module on POE in Oxford Brookes University. Our POE approach involves
assessing and benchmarking actual energy use in buildings as well conducting
occupant satisfaction studies. Currently we are monitoring heat pumps in a
range of UK homes to assess their real performance as part of a Research
Council project, and we are also doing post-occupancy evaluation studies of
University of Portsmouth library building. We have carried out POE studies of
22 Oxford City Council-owned buildings, and about 15 sustainable buildings.

meet users’ needs?
Testing preliminary environmental strategies of the building (orientation,

the different users of the building.

PRP
Multidisciplinary
Through our founding membership of the UK Green Building Council and
Architectural Practice
position on the steering group of the Existing Homes Alliance, PRP has taken a
Greg Slater
lead in addressing the challenge of sustainably refurbishing our existing stock
07715 122 576
to achieve deep cuts in carbon emissions.
[email address]
We believe that PRP is in pole position to help drive the change required. From
option appraisal and technical specification (in partnership with our in-house
environmental services team) to statutory compliance and resident consultation,
we offer a key professional resource to ensure that all upgrade activity is
designed for long-term gain.
At a practical level we have also developed a series of exemplar schemes for
properties ranging from solid walled Victorian terraced housing through to an
iconic Grade II listed concrete high-rise, showing that emissions reductions in
excess of 80 per cent are achievable even in the most difficult of circumstances
QinetiQ
Technology research,
QinetiQ have developed a means to overlay synthetically generated imagery or
development, products
information into live video feeds. This has been successfully exploited in the
James Kearse
defence domain for training and decision support activities, and has the
0779 2262184
potential to support the built environment. QinetiQ are currently partnering with
[email address]
Imperial College, London to explore the application of this technology into this
area.
The technology has a number of potential applications. These include the
overlay of Computer Aided Design (CAD) information onto the real world to
assist in materials estimates and reduce waste or assess the environment
impact of potential new developments. Specifically, overlay of (for example) the
thermal signatures of buildings could assist in identifying areas of wastage. The
ultimate exploitation of this technology could be in rationalising a number of
existing built environment tools into a single form factor for real-time
environmental assessment

within existing housing stock.

Riches Hawley Mikhail (RHM) are architects and designers with recent
expertise in providing innovative low carbon housing. We have won the
‘Housing Design Awards’ for two years running and are short listed again this
year; all for innovative, pragmatic social housing.
Recent projects employed very low carbon construction, using products such as
hemp, sprayed into prefabricated timber frames. (Clay Field in Suffolk for Orwell
HA) This is in addition to having very low energy requirements in use. Having
spoken with the competition organisers, we have confirmed that considering
energy in construction will be an important consideration within this competition.

water resistant. There is no change in appearance of masonry once the
01403 210204 ex 867
coating has been applied a the treated wall remains breathable to water vapour
[email address]
By reducing the moisture content of a wall the thermal resistance is increased.
In theory, the U-value of a single skin wall is reduced from 4.0 to 2.9 W/m2/C by
removing moisture.
Safeguard are working with University of Portsmouth to quantify the heat
savings in practice. We would like to develop a co-operation with a partner in
control of housing stock so we can run full scale tests to see what energy
savings are actually found.
