Dear Ms Black

Freedom of information request – RFI20080789

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the “Act”) dated 17 July
2008.

You requested:

“Based on the precedent set by your release of the cost of BBC Action Network (see link below), please
send me the annual cost of the recently-closed BBC Holiday website from 2003 onwards.
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/bbc_action_network_cost#incoming-272”

In response to your request, the gross spend for the BBC Holiday website is as follows, the vast
majority of the spend being staff time:

Financial Year     Gross Spend
2003/2004          £99,520
2004/2005          £66,713
2005/2006          £53,278
2006/2007          £41,104

We hope you find this helpful.

Please note that the information you requested is not covered by the Freedom of Information Act.
Your request is outside the scope of the Act because the BBC and the other public service
broadcasters are covered by the Act only in respect of information held for purposes “other than
those of journalism, art or literature” (see Schedule I, Part VI of the Act). On this occasion however
we’re happy to respond to your request because the site is now closed.  Nevertheless, we are
distinguishing this request from the request you have referred to regarding the BBC Action Network

on the grounds that the BBC’s role in relation to the Action Network site was an impartial one,
providing a neutral platform to help anyone in the UK become more involved in local civic and
democratic activities. For more information about how the Act applies to the BBC please see
www.bbc.co.uk/foi. Please note that this guidance is not intended to be a comprehensive legal
interpretation of how the Act applies to the BBC.

The BBC does not offer an internal review when the information requested is not covered by the
Act. If you disagree with our decision you can appeal to the Information Commissioner. Contact
details are: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire,

Yours sincerely
