Policy & Procedure for Promoting Good Behaviour
“Achieving Excellence Together in a Caring Community”
Date of Policy: June 2009
Review Date: Annually
This policy aims to provide a clear framework for all members of the school community to follow and thus ensure a consistent approach to all pupils, both inside and out of the classroom.
At Dorchester we believe that all pupils can behave well and we will expect them to do so. We believe that by the consistent implementation of an agreed policy to promote good behaviour, a supportive and caring environment will be created for every one. We are committed to giving the pupils clear boundaries in which to learn so that they can clearly understand what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour and the consequences of their chosen action.
The implementation of this policy will support the pupils in
Understanding the value of mutual respect
Learning to take responsibility for their own actions
Understanding that differences are positive
Pupils will be encouraged to:
Follow the golden rules
Reflect on the relationship between cause and consequences
Share in each others' achievements
Feel positive about belonging to the school
Staff will:
Praise the pupils and use positive language
Provide positive role models
Expect all pupils to behave well in classroom and shared areas eg corridors.
Treat all pupils with fairness and consistency
Follow the agreed procedures of this policy
Keep all necessary records
Ensure triggers are limited to minimise poor behaviour
Model Behaviour by all
All adults within the school community will have high expectations of pupils' behaviour and will model this themselves. The Golden Rules, agreed with and by all members of the school community, are displayed in the classrooms, corridors and are visible from the playground.
The Golden Rules are:
Do be kind and helpful
Do be gentle
Do listen
Do work hard
Do look after property
Do be honest
All pupils will be expected to follow the Golden Rules at all times and staff are expected to encourage them in a positive way at all times. All pupils are entitled to 30 minutes Golden Time a week.
REWARDS
Rewards are in place to help heighten pupils' self esteem. They should be used to reinforce acceptable behaviour and be consistently distributed by staff.
Systems in place include:
Lots of praise, smiles and encouragement
Team points across the whole school with a termly winning Team House party organised by the House Captains supported by staff
Stickers
30 minutes of Golden Time weekly
Points make prizes - pupils can earn up to 30 points a week and chose a prize from 60 points
Deputy Head award (10 House points)
Head teacher award (25 House points)
SANCTIONS
All pupils need to be encouraged at all times to follow the Golden Rules. They need to be praised and supported at all times. Poor behaviour is usually triggered by a reaction to another person's behaviour, an inappropriate curriculum, inconsistent application of the Golden Rules or poor self esteem.
Sanctions are used when the Golden Rules are not adhered to.
The steps, consistently applied, are:
Verbal warning
Three strikes (crosses on board, unhappy faces)
5 minute slots cut from Golden Time
If a child loses all their Golden Time the Head teacher will be informed and the child will be reprimanded, a letter will be sent to the parents to inform them of this behaviour
In the playground, the same three steps are to be followed, but the insertion of a Time Out facility prior to the three strikes may be used to greater benefit. All playground incidents will be reported so that consistency between the classroom and the playground can be maintained.
Reporting Incidents
The following systems are in place for reporting incidents
Mid day supervisors discuss concerns with senior midday supervisors and class teacher of offence.
Senior MDS to report to Key Stage co-ordinator and/or class teacher if poor behaviour continues
The Head teacher needs to be kept informed of repeated incidents of poor behaviour
Further action includes if the behaviour continues despite support and encouragement to improve:
Withdrawal of privileges e.g. playtimes, lunch times play, school visits, school journeys
Discussion with parents/carers
Investigation of behaviour and support; possible referral to the SEN team Behaviour Support Team, educational psychologist
Separating from peer group
Internal exclusion
Solitary exclusion
Fixed term exclusion will only be used as a last resort when all other support has been exhausted. The school will follow the DCSF Government recommended guidance (September 2006).
Organisation
All staff need to be fair and consistent when encouraging good behaviour and have high expectations for all pupils
House Points should be given weekly to encourage team work, good behaviour and good work and a record should be displayed in the class.
House Points should be collected weekly and recorded in the House Point book and reported to the whole school assembly weekly on a Monday.
Teachers need to keep a list of pupils who consistently lose Golden Time and ensure that the Headteacher/ SLT are aware of these pupils.
Good communication is key
Clear communication is vital to everyone at all times. In the event of continuous poor behaviour parents must be informed. Any incident, which is a concern, should be shared with the parents and SENCo/Head teacher. The SENCo/Headteacher should be made aware of all pupils who are having difficulty with good behaviour. The Chair of Governors should be informed if there is a serious concern about a pupil. This information should be kept confidential in the event of an exclusion and the right of appeal.
Home/School Partnership
All parents/carers will be sent a copy of the Home/School agreement annually in September which details responsibilities and expectations for all.
All pupils and parents will receive a personalised leaflet in the autumn term identifying the school's Golden rules, expectations and sanctuaries.
All parents/carers will be kept informed of any concerns or poor behaviour and work together with staff to promote good behaviour.
Parents' opinion is sought about behaviour through the annual parent questionnaire.
At Dorchester Primary all pupils are supported and encouraged to achieve excellence together in a caring community.
