Extract from letter from the Historic Dockyard Chatham 27th November 2008
We will certainly use our 25th Anniversary year to build awareness of The Historic Dockyard nationally and
internationally, and I hope that you and your colleagues can assist in that process now that you understand the
achievements. If successful, our efforts to host the national British Armed Forces’ and Veterans’ Day on 27th
June 2009 will be a major boost to our profile as well as for the people of Medway who have such pride in their
unparalleled 400-year military history.

Oth
er developments – Armed Forces Day 2009
9.
John Hutton informed Cabinet Colleagues in a letter of January 21st (copy at
Annex C) about the
arrangements for this year’s Armed Forces Day (June 27th), which is intended to provide an occasion
during which the nation has the opportunity to show their appreciation for the contribution made to
society by all those who serve and have served in HM’s Armed Forces.
10.
To provide a focus for national recognition, MoD is supporting a national event, and bids were received
from a number of local authorities and other organisations to be the national event host. Against stiff
competition, Chatham Historic Dockyard was selected as the host for the 2009 national event.
Consequently the draft reply congratulates CHDT on being successful in their bid.
11.
John Hutton’s letter also asks departments to do what they can to support Armed Forces Day. Apart from
alerting our NDPBs to this celebration and encouraging them to support it if they can, DCMS itself has no
resources to do so.
