I write in reply of your request of the 29/04/2009. Please find enclosed the information the Council are able to provide.
Receiving Services as a Deaf Child
There are 27 Deaf children who all fulfil all the following criteria
Are currently receiving services as a direct result of their deafness.
The services provided includes, activities, advice and guidance.
The children have very significant difficulty accessing speech sounds. Many are profoundly deaf across all frequencies; many of these will have `profound' as part of their medical diagnosis.
There are 18 (out of the 27 listed above) children who fulfil all the following criteria's
Have an active knowledge of BSL
Are currently receiving services from Children's Services.
There are 9 children who meet all the criteria for the first answer (receive service and have very significant difficulty accessing speech sounds) but do not have any active use of BSL and communicate orally.
