Thank you for your request for information, which was received by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council on 23rd April 2009 and which the Council has considered under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

  1. How many dogs have been seized by the council under Section One of the Dangerous Dogs Act in each year from 2000 to 2008?

  1. How many prosecutions under Section One of the Dangerous Dogs Act did the council proceed with in 2007 and 2008?

  1. How many dogs have been seized under Section One of the Dangerous Dogs Act so far this year (2009)? Of those seized, how many have been signed over for destruction by their owners?

  1. How many applications have been made to the Magistrates court under section 4b of the Dangerous Dogs Act in the last three years? Of those 4b applications, how many resulted in destruction orders and how many resulted in registration onto the Index of Exempted Dogs?

  1. How many dogs are currently held under Section One of the Dangerous Dogs Act by Tameside Borough Council?

  1. How many dogs have been handed over by their owners to Tameside Borough Council dog wardens as dogs prohibited under the Dangerous Dogs Act - illegally owned pit bull terrier types?

  1. How many dogs held as stray dogs by your council have been identified as "pit bull type" during 2007, 2008 and so far this year 2009? Of those stray dogs identified by council dog wardens as prohibited types-what number were destroyed by Tameside Borough Council in each year stated?

  1. How are Tameside Borough Council dog wardens trained to identify prohibited types of dogs as defined by the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 legislation?

I am pleased to advise that the Council can provide all the information that you have requested.

In response to your request, I have summarised the information as follows

  1. The number of dogs seized by the council under section 1 of the Dangerous dogs act from year 2000 to 2008 is zero.

  1. The Number of Prosecutions proceeded with under Section one of the dangerous dogs act during 2007 and 2008 is zero.

  1. The amount of dogs that have been seized under Section One of the Dangerous Dogs Act so far this year 2009 is zero and hence none have been signed over for destruction.

  1. No applications have been made to the Magistrates court under section 4b of the Dangerous Dogs Act in the last three years and none have resulted in destruction orders.

  1. Tameside Borough Council currently holds No dogs under Section One of the Dangerous Dogs Act

  1. No dogs have been handed over by their owners to Tameside Borough Council dog wardens as dogs prohibited under the Dangerous Dogs Act .

  1. No dogs were held as strays by Tameside Borough council during 2007/2008 however one dog was identified as a pit bull type in march 2009 and that said dog was destroyed.

  1. Tameside Borough dog wardens are not trained to assess Pit bull types.

The Council will not be charging you for the time taken by council officers to find, sort, edit or redact the requested material.
