Dear Mr Grimshaw,

Thank you for your e-mail of 22/04/2009 in which you have requested information on the number of complaints received about police officers not wearing identification numbers and numbers of those disciplined for not following standard rules regarding police identification numbers in the last 5 years.

The Home Office has not been responsible for the collation and publication of police discipline or police complaint statistics since 1 April 04. Since that time it has been the responsibility of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). The information is collated and published annually on the IPCC website (http://www.ipcc.gov.uk/index/resources/research/stats.htm) in broad categories but it is not collected to the level requested. This level of information may be available, but only by writing to each police force.

If you are dissatisfied with this response you may request an independent internal review of our handling of your request by submitting your complaint within two months to the address below quoting reference 11803 :

During the independent review the department's handling of your information request will be reassessed by staff who were not involved in providing you with this response. Should you remain dissatisfied after this internal review, you will have a right of complaint to the Information Commissioner as established by section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act.

Yours sincerely
