Dear Mr Dewsbury,
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST 3036/2009
I write in connection with your request for information received by Kent Police on the 20th April
2009. I am very conscious that this response finds you some time after the statutory time limit
permitted to a public authority to respond to requests has passed and for the lateness of this
response I apologise.
I note that you seek access to information relating to the number of people arrested for
soliciting prostitutes or kerb crawling by Kent Police in 2008.
Following receipt of your request searches were conducted within Kent Police to locate
information relevant to your request and I can now respond as follows.
Question 1. How many people were arrested for soliciting prostitutes or kerb; crawling by Kent
police in each month of 2008.
Question 2. Of those arrested in each month the number who were a) released; without charge;
b) cautioned; c) charged; d) fined; e) If none of the above can be applied to each arrest I would
like; to know how the crime was dealt with.
Answer: Kent Police records show that between 1st January 2008 and 31st December 2008, 10
people were charged with kerb crawling/soliciting for the purpose of prostitution and 5 people
were refused charge.
The following table shows the month and total numbers of arrests:
Arrest Month
Charge
Refused
Charge
February

2
March

May

November

For your information the definition of a ‘charge’ is when the individual is charged with the
offence and the definition of ‘refused charge’ is when there is not enough evidence or the
custody sergeant decides that no crime has been committed.
