Thank you for your request for the following information:

There are eight questions to this request as follows:

(1) What was the total expenditure of the Council on leisure and recreation in 2007/08?

(2) What was the total expenditure on children's play services and facilities in the same year for those aged under 16 years?

(3) What amount of this came from either Big Lottery and/or Central Government funding?

(4) What was the estimated population of the authority area in the same year?

(5) What was the total estimated population aged under 16 years in the same year?

(6) If available, what proportion of use of leisure centres and recreation facilities was by children aged under 16 years in the same period?

(7) If appropriate, what was the % use of Libraries run by the authority by children aged under 16 in the same period?

(8) If appropriate, in the years from its introduction what has been the expenditure by the authority under Section 508 of the Education Act 1996, and what proportion went to voluntary agencies?

The information below has been supplied in response to your request for the

above mentioned information. We hope the information supplied satisfies your original request.

  1. Net expenditure is £1,562,495

  2. There is no funding available for children's play services. The play service was self funded and was responsible solely for running two self-financing childcare provisions for after school and holidays. Thurrock Play Network, a third sector organisation had funding to employ play rangers, through a healthy living grant. Further information to follow on the funding for facilities. The information was not collected in time to respond to this request.

  3. Big Lottery funding for play did not come into effect until May 2008. Playbuilder funding came into effect from September 2008. Further information to follow. The information was not collected in time to respond to this request.

  4. 151,700

  5. 35,200

  6. This information is not available.

  7. 41.5%

  8. The information was not collected in time to respond to this request.

Our apologies for not being able to provide all of the information you require at the current time. The missing information for questions (2), (3) and (8) will be sent out to you in due course.
