0845 v 0300 numbers for all HMRC numbers

Danish Ahmad made this Freedom of Information request to HM Revenue and Customs

The request was successful.

From: Danish Ahmad

10 August 2010

Dear HM Revenue & Customs,

I find it really frustrating that I am still paying for the cost of
a 0845 call at a high rate from a mobile phone without the option
of a 01, 02 or 03 number which forms part of my free land line or
mobile phone tariff. Most government departments are now moving to
this and it is about time that HMRC stops asking its customers to
subsidise the cost of the service. This is especially so when calls
are answered on 0845, we press #1 or #2 and then the lines are
engaged. We still get charged.

My questions are:
1. Has the HMRC considered replacing or clearly advertising 0300
rate phone numbers in addition to 0845 lo-call numbers?

2. If not, when will this be considered and if yes, what was the
outcome and please supply any documents or feasibility study into
the use of 0300 numbers at HMRC including the Benefits Office / Job
Centre Plus and National Insurance Contributions Centre.

Yours faithfully,

Danish Ahmad

Dear Hopkins, Andy (CustCON Contact Cntrs),

1. As an interim measure, why does HMRC not provide alternative
telephone numbers beginning with "01" like they did prior to the
use of non geographical rate numbers? This will at least offer
customers the opportunity to avoid costly 0845 rates number
especially if they have unlimited minutes as part of their fixed
and mobile tariff?

2. How much money has HMRC made from the the use of 0845 in 2009
and year to date 2010?

Yours sincerely,

Danish Ahmad
