0845 numbers

Elfin Delmondo made this Freedom of Information request to HM Revenue and Customs

The request was partially successful.

From: Elfin Delmondo

4 September 2011

Dear HM Revenue and Customs,

Most companies who use 0845 numbers receive an amount per minute
back from the incoming call costs to those 0845 numbers.

1)How much does HMRC receive from this method?

2)If they don't receive any, why not?

3) What happens to these profits? How are they reconciled within
departmental budgets? Are they kept within the specific part of the
HMRC? E.g Tax Credits. Are they donated to charities that work
specifically for that agency's customers? (E.g. Child Tax Credits
profits donated to Children in Need)

4) Does the government consider it a moral thing to do, to profit
from the poorest of its citizens in this way?

5) Could the department consider publicising regular geographical
numbers for each agency/office so that their customers can benefit
from their all-inclusive minutes/calls that most telephone
providers offer?

6) Could other government agencies also make these same changes,
including DWP & the NHS and the GP telephone contact numbers?

Yours faithfully,

Elfin Delmondo

Why can HMRC not use 0300 numbers like some government organisations are doing?

I also made a FOI request sometime ago on the same topic to HMRC.
